Human Biologicals Institute, one of the key human vaccine manufacturing company in the country, in association with Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Circle 10, Khairatabad organized free pre exposure prophylaxis camp against rabies for Municipal Workers & Animal Handlers on the occasion of World Rabies Day. Dr. Damodhar Tummala, Asst. Medical Officer of Healt, GHMC Inaugurated the free vaccination camp at GHMC, Circle 10, Khairatabad.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Damodhar Tummala, Asst. Medical Officer of Health, GHMC Circle 10 said “Municipal workers, Animal Handlers, veterinarians etc are high risk group for rabies as they are in continuous exposure to the animals. In our circle every month around 30 municipal workers are bitten by the street dogs. Today with the noble support of Human Biologicals Institute we have vaccinated around 500 municipal workers & animal handlers. India’s first purified vero cell rabies vaccine “Abhayrab” was administered to our municipal workers & animal handlers. Pre exposure prophylaxis comprises of 3 doses of anti rabies vaccine on day 0, 7 & 28 to the high risk group in order to protect them from in inadvertent exposure to rabies.
Stating on the occasion, Mr. N Anand, General Manager - Human Health, Human Biologicals Institute said “We have been conducting free vaccination camps against rabies for the steet dogs & pet for the past several years in various locations in India with the help of respective state governments. This is for the first time we are conducting free pre exposure prophylaxis camp against rabies for municipal workers & animal handlers. Through such initiatives we try to encourage high risk groups like animal handlers, veterinarians, municipal workers & pet owners for pre exposure prophylaxis against rabies & also create the awareness about the Zoonotic disease. More than 20000 people die due to rabies every year in Indian. Through this camp we want to spread the awareness about pre exposure prophylaxis to the high risk groups. Pre exposure prophylaxis reduces the cost of treatment in case of subsequent re exposures by reducing the number of dosage & requirement of immunoglobulins. We are also encouraging these high risk groups to take pre exposure prophylaxis by providing affordable vaccination through our Abhay clinics. We have a network of 3000 Abhay Clinic which are one stop vaccination centre for animal bite & other vaccine preventable disease. A dedicated national toll free number 1800 425 4068 is also in place for giving information about animal bite management & pre-exposure prophylaxis. In Andhra Pradesh we have a network of 250 Abhay Clinics spread across the state.
